A verified Google Business Profile gets around 200 clicks or interactions per month on average. Businesses in the Google Map Pack (the top 3 results on the map) get 126% more traffic and 93% more actions compared to those ranked 4-10. This is free visibility that most businesses are leaving on the table.
Here's the complete checklist for making your profile work harder.
The basics (do these first)
- Claim and verify your listing. If you haven't done this, nothing else matters. Go to business.google.com and claim your business. Google will send a verification postcard or call you.
- Fill out every single field. Business name, address, phone number, website, hours, category, description, services. Every empty field is a missed signal to Google.
- Choose the right primary category. This is the #1 ranking factor for the map pack. Be specific. "Plumber" is better than "Home Services." "Emergency Plumber" is even better if that's what you do.
- Add your service area if you go to customers instead of them coming to you.
The optimization layer
- Add high-quality photos. Businesses with photos get significantly more engagement. Upload photos of your work, your team, your location. Minimum 10 photos to start, then add new ones monthly.
- Write a keyword-rich description. 750 characters max. Include your primary services and the areas you serve. Write for humans, but make sure Google can understand what you do and where.
- Add all your services with descriptions. This helps you show up for specific service searches.
- Set up messaging. Let customers message you directly from your listing. Respond within 24 hours or Google will deactivate it.
The ongoing maintenance
- Post weekly. Google Posts keep your profile fresh. Share updates, offers, tips, or project photos. Businesses that post regularly see 5x more profile views.
- Respond to every review. Every single one, positive and negative. 89% of consumers are more likely to choose a business that responds to all its reviews.
- Keep your hours updated. Especially holidays and seasonal changes. Inaccurate hours are the fastest way to lose trust.
- Add new photos monthly. This signals to Google that your business is active and current.
Think of your Google Business Profile as your second homepage. For many customers, it's the first and only thing they see before deciding to call you.
Most of your competitors have a bare-bones profile they set up years ago and never touched. That's your opportunity. Thirty minutes of optimization can put you ahead of businesses that have been around for decades.
